A removable denture remains in place due to adhesion and the film of saliva that separates it from the gum. When that veil thins or the bone crest is reabsorbed, microspaces open between the resin and the mucosa into which air and food residues enter: that is where the adhesive works, filling them with a material that hydrates and becomes viscous.

The PVM/MA calcium-sodium copolymer it is the active ingredient that provides hold and is the most abundant component of the formula. It is the mixed calcium and sodium salt of the copolymer between methyl vinyl ether and maleic anhydride: in powder form it is dry and inert, but as soon as it meets saliva it absorbs water, swells and turns into a very viscous and sticky gel, which adheres both to the resin of the prosthesis and to the mucosa. The two ions are not a detail: calcium acts as a bridge between the polymer chains and slows down leaching, sodium governs the speed of hydration. The PVM/MA copolymer is useful in case of dentures that move, reabsorbed ridge and prosthesis that comes off while speaking.

The cellulose gum, i.e. sodium carboxymethylcellulose, is the third component in quantity, immediately after petrolatum, and has a complementary role: it absorbs water very quickly and gives the product its initial consistency, so that the strip of cream stays where you put it instead of running. Cellulose gum is useful in cases of adhesive that slips before insertion and of lower dentures that are difficult to stabilize.

The base is hydrophobic: petrolatum e paraffinum liquidum they keep the two polymers dispersed in a cream that does not hydrate all together, and this is the reason why the hold is distributed over time instead of running out with the first sip of water. The formula is completed by propylparaben, which is the preservative, a flavoring, and the CI 45430, i.e. erythrosine, the pink dye that makes it visible where the cream has been applied. The hydrophobic base and colorant are useful in case of hold that wears off too soon and cream applied by eye.

HOW TO USE

How do I use Polident Long Lasting Adhesive Cream for Dentures and Dental Prostheses 2 x 70 g?

The first time, use a small amount of product. Apply once a day for a secure hold. If you need to apply the adhesive more than once a day, ask your dentist for advice.

Application. 1. Clean and dry the denture. 2. Apply as illustrated, not too close to the edge of the denture: upper denture, three small stripes; lower prosthesis and mobile bridges, two small strips. 3. Rinse your mouth before inserting the denture. 4. Insert the denture and hold it in place by clenching your teeth for a few moments.

Removal. 1. Rinse your mouth with water. 2. Slowly remove the denture with a rocking motion. 3. Remove any adhesive residue from the denture and mouth with warm water and a soft-bristled toothbrush. To carefully clean the denture you can use Polident cleaners and then rinse with water.

Using too much adhesive can cause leaks: in that case, apply less product next time. Keep the cap and spout dry and reseal the cap after use.
